Emissions, Renewables & Energy Efficiency Leaders Gather

April 30, 2005. Plymouth,WI. Orion Energy Systems CEO, Neal Verfuerth, will make a presentation at the Fourth Annual Green Trading Summit held in New York City on Tuesday, May 3, 2005. As the Kyoto Protocol and the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme went into effect in 2005, many commercial and state-level initiatives have emerged in the U.S. The Green Trading Summit was created to help develop a method and a market for voluntary emissions trading.

For example, the California Climate Action Registry is a program designed to create a protocol for documenting the reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, so that U.S. companies can prepare themselves for the inevitability of a voluntary cap and trade system, much like the NOX Budget Program used for nitrous oxide. The idea is that companies who reduce emissions beyond established goals can sell emissions allowances to other companies who do not reach their reduction goals.

Mr. Verfuerths presentation, entitled Aggregation of Emissions Reduction Credits from Energy-Efficient Small and Medium Sized Entreprises, will discuss the importance of creating a method for small and medium sized businesses to combine forces to reduce emissions and energy consumption in a documentable way. Then, the aggregated companies can participate in emissions trading without the usual costly paperwork and verification process that only the largest companies can afford or justify.

Last fiscal year, Orions energy efficient products saved its customers $33.2 million and 600 million kWh. The 2004 energy savings for Orion customers is the environmental equivalent of removing the following emissions from the atmosphere: 584,976 tons of carbon dioxide, 159,524 tons of carbon, 2,544 tons of sodium oxide, 1,227 tons of nitrous oxide and 22.2 pounds of mercury.

With so much at stake in terms of the economy, the environment and energy, Orion Energy Systems and I are honored to be among the presentors at the Green Trading Summit in New York City, stated Orions Verfuerth. We firmly believe that emissions reductions can be achieved cost-effectively by applying the best of the emerging energy efficient technology to the problem, what we call practical environmentalism. Once aggregated, small and medium sized businesses can make major contributions to emissions reductions and emissions trading.

Other companies and governmental groups making presentations at the Green Trading Summit are Fortis Capital, Chicago Climate Exchange, International Emissions Trading Association, General Electric, Fitch Ratings, Chevron/Texaco, Citigroup, U.S. Air Force and Connecticut Clean Energy Fund, to name a few.
