MADISON – Governor Jim Doyle today announced grants totaling $907,500 to one
Wisconsin Municipality, two housing authorities and two non-profit
organizations through the HOME Rental Rehabilitation Program administered by
the Bureau of Housing in the Department of Commerce (Commerce). This
funding will improve more than 50 units, many of them in downtown areas.

“These grants will both expand affordable housing opportunities and foster
downtown development, two key elements in growing our local economies,”
Governor Doyle said. “By providing more affordable housing options downtown
– increased business activity will follow, creating new jobs for the
community.”

The HOME Rental Rehabilitation Program is designed to help landlords
renovate the stock of affordable rental units. Repairs and improvements are
made to rental units leased to persons who have low and very low incomes.
The grants will allow communities to provide low interest loans to rental
property owners covering up to 75 percent of the costs of repairs to help
defray the rehabilitation expenses.
