– Focus on Energy sponsors awards luncheon and conference for leadership in energy efficiency-

OCONOMOWOC, Wis. (October 25, 2004) – Focus on Energy, Wisconsin’s energy efficiency and renewable energy program was a platinum sponsor of the inaugural Wisconsin Sustainability & Energy Efficiency (SE2) Leadership Awards luncheon. The event was held at the Olympia Conference Center in Oconomowoc on Wednesday, October 13.

Six awards were given, two each in three categories including Excellence, Merit, Mechanical Design and Daylighting Controls. Focus on Energy along with six professional organizations and associations including Energy Center of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Green Building Alliance, and the Wisconsin sections of American Institute of Architects (AIA), ASHRAE, Illuminating Engineering Society, (IES),and International Facility Management Association (IFMA) spent the last 18 months developing the SE2 Leadership Awards. The purpose of the event is to recognize energy efficient and sustainable design, construction and operation of Wisconsin commercial and other non-residential buildings. The goal in creating the awards was to encourage greater collaboration among owners, designers, builders, and operators by highlighting the value of projects that enhance the built environment.

This year’s winners of the Awards of Excellence were The Kubala Washatko Architects for the Schlitz Audubon Center in Bayside and Hoffman for the Hoffman Corporate Offices in Appleton. Winners of the Merit award included The Boldt Company for the Wisconsin River Valley Office in Stevens Point and The Kubala Washatko Architects for the Urban Ecology Center in Milwaukee. The Special Citation for Mechanical Design went to IBC Engineering for the Harry & Lynde Bradley School of Technology & Trade in Milwaukee and Special Citation for Daylighting Controls went to HGA for UW Whitewater DLK/Kachel Fieldhouse.

Using the theme of the award, an annual conference was developed for real estate developers and construction professionals, jointly coordinated by Wisconsin Green Building Alliance and the
Energy Center of Wisconsin. This conference combined two previous conferences – Greening the Built Environment and the High Performance Building Conference operated by these two organizations. The intent of this conference was to educate the audience on a whole building approach to the design of buildings that are energy efficient, healthy, have low long-term operating costs, and minimal impact on the environment.
