Madison – Governor Scott Walker has proclaimed October as Manufacturing Month throughout Wisconsin to recognize the economic strength that a strong manufacturing industry brings to the state. More than 467,000 workers are employed in the manufacturing sector, accounting for 19 percent of gross domestic product, and contributing over $57 billion to Wisconsin’s economic growth.

“With over 9,500 manufacturing employers in the state, it is imperative our future workforce be familiar with the quality careers that manufacturing offers,” Governor Walker said. “Manufacturing Month offers students, parents, and the public the opportunity to experience a firsthand view of today’s modern manufacturers found throughout Wisconsin.”

Due to retirements and economic expansion, there will be significant opportunities for employment in Wisconsin’s manufacturing industry in the years to come. Through investments that advance workforce and economic development, Wisconsin is working with partnering organizations in order to support Wisconsin manufacturers and workers.

Governor Walker continues to demonstrate his commitment to strengthening the job outlook for students graduating high school, particularly in manufacturing, by making significant investments in programs like Wisconsin’s Youth Apprenticeship (YA). The program, which combines classroom instruction with on-the-job training, had 636 students enrolled in manufacturing-related programs for the 2015-16 school year. Programs like YA enable students to graduate high school with the skills needed for an entry-level job in manufacturing.

Throughout Manufacturing Month, cabinet officials and other statewide leaders will be visiting employers who are inviting students, parents, and the public to tour their facilities in order to change perceptions about the industry and strengthen the likelihood more Wisconsinites will pursue manufacturing as a career path.
