Wauwatosa, WI – Agro BioSciences, Inc. announced today that it received a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I Grant for its project titled: Increased Bioavailability of Polyphenols through Bacterial Metabolism. The research grant was awarded by the National Institutes of Health, National Center For Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Principal Investigator Dr. Noah Zimmerman commented, “We are excited about receiving this highly competitive award and look forward to advancing the science related to biotransformations of polyphenols to make more nutritious and effective foods for humans and animals.”

The SBIR award will allow Agro BioSciences to continue its research program to identify and improve availability of bioactive phytochemicals, like antioxidants, that improve human and animal health. Antioxidants are an important part of human and animal diets that are known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer as well as play an important role in reducing chronic inflammation associated with obesity. Understanding how the microbes in our guts can improve the action and adsorption of antioxidants in our diets is a key prerequisite for improving human health.
