Kahler Slater:Kahler Slater-designed Martha Jefferson Hospital named America’s Most Beautiful

Firm’s San Juan Regional Medical Center Ranked Sixth

MILWAUKEE – Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, Va. – designed by Milwaukee-based, award-winning architecture and experience design firm Kahler Slater, – has been named America’s Most Beautiful Hospital by Soliant Health, a leading specialty health care staffing provider and part of Adecco Group.

A second Kahler Slater project – San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, N.M. – took sixth place in the contest.

This was the fourth year for the contest. Facilities from around the country were nominated. Fifty competitors were then selected and put to a public vote. Nearly 170,000 votes were cast, with Martha Jefferson Hospital receiving 43,217 votes.

Martha Jefferson Hospital

Located on Pantops Mountain, Martha Jefferson Hospital is within sight of Thomas Jefferson’s historic Monticello and takes full advantage of the same views that inspired Jefferson nearly 250 years ago. The facility opened in August 2011.

“From the very beginning of the design process, our aim has been to provide our patients, visitors and staff with a comfortable, pleasant environment,” said Jim Haden, president of Martha Jefferson Hospital, a member of Sentara Healthcare. “We believe that such an environment improves their overall experience and patient outcomes. Ultimately, we wanted the facility itself to reflect our vision to set the standard for clinical quality and personalized health care services.”

David Alexander, president of Soliant Health, added, “More than a thousand different studies show that when a patient feels more comfortable and less stressed, the healing process is faster. Martha Jefferson Hospital combines state-of-the-art equipment, advanced technologies and a nurturing, friendly environment to merge the science of medicine with the art of healing.”

The hospital features all private rooms, decorative frosted glass windows that bring in natural light while maintaining patient privacy, a pitched roof and gardens that promote a feeling of home, and warm colors and works of art inside that create a sense of healing.

San Juan Regional Medical Center

Completed in 2009, San Juan Regional Medical Center incorporates the latest technology, a deep respect for diverse beliefs and spiritual traditions, and a love of the dramatic landscape of New Mexico’s Four Corners area. Design cues and materials are taken from the vernacular architecture of the region. Sustainable design features include deep overhangs and screened porches that reduce the cooling load.
