MILWAUKEE, WI – (January 2011) Historic Milwaukee, Inc (HMI) announces Doors Open Milwaukee, a special event taking place September 24th and 25th, 2011.
100 BUILDINGS
100 buildings, many seldom visited by the public, are planned to be open for tours free of charge. HMI is simultaneously planning three-dozen specialty tours. These in-depth tours will involve architects, historians, urban planners, and local experts.
COMMUNITY PARTNERS
This sizeable event is being planned in partnership with the City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, MMAC, VISIT Milwaukee, Milwaukee Downtown BID #21, the East Town, Westown, and Historic Third Ward Associations, Marquette University, and the American Institute of Architects – Wisconsin Chapter.
BIRD’S-EYE and WORM’S-EYE
35 buildings are already committed as of this month. Included are City Hall, the US Bank Observation Deck, the Milwaukee Gas Light building, the Milwaukee Athletic Club, the Pabst Theater, and Marquette University Law School (Eckstein Hall).
INTERNATIONAL HIT
This year Milwaukee joins a distinguished list of international cities promoting their architectural heritage through similar events. These cities include Paris, London, Toronto, New York, Chicago and Denver.
OPENING DOORS
The visitor experience will be like getting a backstage pass to see the hidden treasures held in these buildings. Some areas that will be opened include basements, belfries, judicial chambers, sanctuaries, green roofs and skylights.
Doors Open Milwaukee is intended to bring heightened appreciation to our downtown and highlight the architectural and historic sites that are the pride of our city.
