Wisconsin adds thousands of private-sector jobs; unemployment rate falls from June

MADISON – Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Roberta Gassman announced today that Wisconsin added 6,500 private-sector jobs (seasonally adjusted) in July. Without adjusting for seasonal factors, the state added 16,400 jobs in the private sector.

“The Wisconsin economy created thousands of private-sector jobs in July, showing we are headed in the right direction but still have much more work to do,” Secretary Gassman said. “We need to keep doing everything we can to keep Wisconsin’s economy growing and providing more job opportunities.”

Since January 2010, Wisconsin has gained 25,000 private-sector jobs (seasonally adjusted). In addition, the number of non-farm jobs in the state is above the level of a year ago, representing the first year-to-year increase since May 2008.

Jobs Numbers

With seasonal adjustment, Wisconsin added a total of 9,400 jobs in July including 6,500 in the private-sector. The addition of 2,900 jobs in government is a statistical calculation that does not reflect actual hiring activity, but is the result of a less-than-expected total drop in government jobs without seasonal adjustment (-29,000) over the month.

Wisconsin added 16,400 private-sector jobs in July without seasonal adjustment, with the strongest gains in leisure and hospitality (8,400), goods producing (6,400) and manufacturing (4,800).

Unemployment Rate

Wisconsin’s unemployment rate dropped to 7.8 percent (seasonally adjusted) in July from 7.9 percent in June, remaining below the national unemployment rate of 9.5 percent. Without seasonal adjustment, the state rate fell to 7.8 percent from 8.1 percent, while the national rate rose to 9.7 percent from 9.6 percent.

Through June 2010, Wisconsin’s unemployment rate remains below that of other heavy-manufacturing Midwest states including Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
