Credits and reduced natural gas prices translating into lower heating bills this winter

MADISON, WI – February 19, 2010 – Wisconsin Power and Light Company (WPL), a subsidiary of Alliant Energy Corporation (NYSE: LNT), will be crediting its natural gas customers a total of approximately $4.5 million beginning next month. The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin approved the credit issuance at its regular open meeting earlier today. The credit is the result of a natural gas purchase plan that was developed to pass on natural gas purchase cost savings to customers and is the remaining portion of refund amounts that were issued in 2007 and 2008.

The one-time gas credit will appear on March or April bills and is expected to total about $16.50 for the average residential customer using approximately 800 therms of natural gas per year. When you combine the credit with significantly lower natural gas prices this winter, the total impact translates into more affordable heating bills this winter heating season.

According to WPL’s Monthly Natural Gas Update issued February 15, the average WPL natural gas customer has seen their heating costs come down 25 percent so far this winter heating season when compared to last winter: a difference of more than $145.

“Given the challenging economy, it’s especially good news for our communities, customers and company when natural gas prices are lower,” said Barbara Swan, President-WPL. “More reasonable heating bills mean more dollars for other necessity items and purchases, which is a positive for everyone.”
