DATCP: Search opens for 63rd Alice in Dairyland

MADISON – Applications are open for the next Alice in Dairyland, to be named May 22nd in Rock County.

“Alice in Dairyland is the spokesperson for Wisconsin’s signature industry – agriculture, which is a $59.16 billion industry. From interviewing with media and using social media, to public speaking to groups of all sizes and varying backgrounds, to visiting farms and classrooms to work with youth – A day as Alice in Dairyland is always different, yet very rewarding,” says Cheryl O’Brien, 62nd Alice in Dairyland.

Alice in Dairyland is a one-year, full-time contract position with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. The 63rd Alice in Dairyland will begin work June 7 after being selected in Rock County during the finals May 20-22. She will travel about 40,000 miles as a spokesperson for Wisconsin’s food, fiber, and biofuel industries. Additionally, she will present hundreds of speeches, provide more than 100 media interviews, and visit thousands of students throughout the year.

Applicants must be Wisconsin residents and at least 21 years of age by June 7. The Alice in Dairyland position is steeped in tradition, requiring the ability to discuss Wisconsin’s agricultural commodities, products, and issues facing agriculture in both rural and urban settings with public speaking skills being essential. Applicants must possess a passion for agriculture. Due to the professional demands of this position, at least three years of education, training, or experience in communications, marketing, public relations, or a combination of these is required. Knowledge or experience in planning and executing public relations or marketing campaigns is a plus.

This contract position receives a $40,000 annual salary. The position also includes holiday, vacation and sick leave; reimbursement for professional travel expenses and health insurance premium compensation up to $450/mo.
