MEEA recognizes company for bold disaster response and unique outreach

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – November 13, 2009 – Interstate Power and Light Company, an Alliant Energy company (Alliant Energy) has been recognized as a 2010 Inspiring Efficiency award winner by the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA). The award recognizes Midwest leaders who deliver groundbreaking advancements for energy efficiency through Leadership, Education, Impact, Innovation and Marketing.

Alliant Energy was selected in two award categories: Impact Award and Marketing Award. The Impact Award recognizes significant contributions to market changes that have reduced energy consumption and/or increased use of energy efficient products. The Marketing Award recognizes organizations that have engaged in a campaign, program, strategy, or idea to increase the adoption of energy efficient products and/or best practices in the Midwest region.

“This is great recognition for Alliant Energy and our work to encourage customers to become more energy efficient,” says Bill Harvey-Chairman and CEO, Alliant Energy. “We are pleased that our efforts to help flood-affected customers recover and incorporate energy efficiency during their rebuild process were well-received. We are also committed to helping business customers identify and implement cost-effective methods to reduce their environmental impact. “

IMPACT Award: Bold steps turn disastrous flood into opportunities for rebuilding “green” with utility incentives.

Alliant Energy was at the epicenter when the Cedar River rose over 19 feet above flood stage, covering more than 10 square miles of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The damage was catastrophic and thousands of Iowans faced the task of rebuilding their homes. Alliant Energy recognized that homeowners were in a unique situation because of the flood requiring replacement of multiple appliances, systems and other pieces of equipment at one time. In response, the utility used this opportunity to encourage consumers to install more energy efficient products in their homes.

Alliant Energy launched a post-flood rebate program centered on helping its customers rebuild green. In addition to saving energy and money, replacing equipment lost in the flood with more energy efficient equipment is the equivalent to the amount of carbon sequestered annually by 250 acres of pine trees.

MARKETING Award: Showcase calendar generates strong interest in commercial/industrial energy efficiency.

In 2009, Alliant Energy developed its first ever “Being Green” calendar for customers highlighting energy efficiency programs and best practices already in use throughout the utility service territory. Featured projects included insulating boilers, replacing inefficient dryers, retrofitting lighting, installing LED traffic signals, upgrading compressed air systems and incorporating energy efficiency into new construction. The calendar has been reprinted twice to meet customer demand, and has generated inquiries about being featured in future editions, as well as interest in exploring energy efficiency programs.

The winners will be honored at the MEEA’s Midwest Energy Solutions Conference taking place January 13-15, 2010, at InterContinental Chicago, the first ENERGY STAR® certified hotel in Chicago.
