Science and mathematics faculty members at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will share their love of science and scientific inquiry with Wisconsin high school students, the next generation of young scientists, researchers and mathematicians, at UWSP’s first-ever STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Career Day on Friday, November 6.

College of Letters and Science Dean Chris Cirmo will lead the faculty in urging students to consider post-secondary studies at UWSP.

“We know that the nation needs a new generation of young scientists, engineers, and mathematicians,” said Cirmo. “UWSP has the curriculum, faculty, and undergraduate research opportunities to meet those 21st century challenges and give our students, young and old alike, the necessary studies to excel in the fields of scientific discovery.”

Almost 200 tenth and eleventh grade students and their chaperones from throughout Wisconsin will spend the day with faculty members leading workshops on cutting-edge science, engineering and mathematics disciplines. Young people will learn about careers in science and technology, have opportunities for hands-on learning and get a sample of university life. Workshop sessions will include biotechnology, nanotechnology, paper science and engineering, health science, geography and GIS (geographic information systems), water resources, science education, mathematics, chemistry, physics, cryogenics, forestry, soil science, biology, and astronomy.

The conference was initiated and coordinated by UWSP’s Continuing Education. Other sponsors include the College of Letters and Science, the College of Natural Resources and the College of Professional Studies.
