Manpower: Mild job market expected for Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis, WI MSA

June 9, 2009 – Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis area employers expect to hire at a moderate pace during the third quarter of 2009, according to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey.

From July to September, 15% of the companies interviewed plan to hire more employees, while 12% expect to reduce their payrolls. Another 68% expect to maintain their current staff levels and 5% are not certain of their hiring plans.

“The hiring activity is expected to be stronger than the previous quarter when 12% of companies surveyed planned to increase staff levels and 16% expected to cut payrolls,” said Manpower spokesperson Nicole Langley.

For the coming quarter, job prospects appear best in Construction, Nondurable Goods Manufacturing, Wholesale & Retail Trade, Financial Activities, Professional & Business Services and Leisure & Hospitality. Employers in Durable Goods Manufacturing, Transportation & Utilities, Information, Education & Health Services, Other Services and Government plan to reduce staffing levels.

Of the more than 28,000 employers surveyed in the U.S., 15% expect to increase their staff levels during the July – September period, while 13% expect to reduce their payrolls, resulting in a Net Employment Outlook of 2%. Sixty-seven percent expect no change in hiring, and 5% are undecided about their Quarter 3 2009 hiring plans.

The next Manpower Employment Outlook Survey will be released on September 8, 2009 to report hiring expectations for Quarter 4 2009.
