Federal Reserve economist provides economic outlook

Beloit, WI – William Strauss, senior economist and economic advisor with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, is the guest speaker at the Greater Beloit Chamber of Commerce Legislative Breakfast on Friday November 14. Strauss will present a post-election economic update from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at The Beloit Inn, 500 Pleasant St.

The charge is $10 for GBCC members and $15.00 for non-members and includes a full breakfast. Please RSVP in advance to (608) 365-8835 or info@greaterbeloitchamber.com.

What is the economic forecast now that Americans have chosen a new president? Is the country positioned for a recession? How does the Midwest fare in all this? These questions and other timely economic issues will be discussed at the Legislative Breakfast.

With the current financial turmoil there is great concern about the country’s future economic growth and stability. Attending a recent financial analysts’ luncheon in Milwaukee, Strauss did not offer any optimistic comments.

“Growth rates are going to remain lousy, probably through the end of next year, largely because of the weak housing market and volatile credit markets,” Strauss said. “We were kind of skirting a recession to begin with, and with what happened in the past month, I think we’re going to be hard-pressed not to have one.” Breakfast attendees will find out if Strauss’ opinion remains the same after the election.

Strauss has taught as an adjunct faculty member at Loyola University Chicago and Webster University, Chicago. He currently teaches at the University of Chicago, Graham School of General Studies and at DePaul University, Kellstadt Graduate School of Business.

His research paper topics include analysis of the manufacturing sector, the auto sector, the Midwest regional economy, the trade-weighted dollar, business cycles and Federal Reserve payments operations.
