UW Hospitals recognized by U.S. News and World Report

UW Hospitals in Madison was the highest-ranked Wisconsin hospital for nine categories in a new U.S. News and World Report listing.

Other Wisconsin hospitals given a nod were Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, and Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Using data from around 5,000 medical centers and surveys from over 30,000 doctors, report authors rank hospitals in 16 areas like cancer, rehabilitation, surgery and more. In some categories, the top 50 are ranked, while only the top 12 or 13 are ranked in others.

Of the hospitals surveyed, 158 were ranked in at least one area.

Though UW Hospitals was ranked in 10 of the 16 focus areas, its best score was 10th place in gynecology.

UW Hospitals was ranked 43rd for cancer, 48th for cardiology and heart surgery, 42nd for gastroenterology and GI surgery, 27th for geriatrics, 30th for nephrology, 49th for neurology and neurosurgery, 45th for orthopedics, 29th for pulmonology and 21st for urology.

Aside from the rankings, U.S. News and World Report also named hospitals in the top 25 percent of a given specialty as “high-performing.” UW Hospitals was ranked as high-performing in diabetes and endocrinology.

“To be in the top 50 hospitals means that you are ranked in the top 1 percent in those specialties,” said Dr. Alan Kaplan, president and CEO of UW Health. “And it is especially gratifying to see that gynecology’s steady rise in the rankings has brought it to the top 10.”

Both Aurora St. Luke’s and Froedtert were ranked in three categories each.

Aurora St. Luke’s was ranked 35th for cardiology and heart surgery, 29th for gynecology and 50th for geriatrics.

Froedtert was ranked 47th for ear, nose and throat care, 45th for pulmonology and 50th for nephrology, or kidney-focused medicine.

Nationally, Mayo Clinic was the highest ranked hospital, with 11 top-three rankings. Mayo Clinic was the top-rated hospital for diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, gynecology, nephrology, and neurology and neurosurgery.

Other highly ranked hospitals include John Hopkins Hospital and Cleveland Clinic, each with seven top-three rankings.
