Eagle, Wis. – Weekends this fall, the fields and kitchen at Old World Wisconsin will come to life! Starting in September and lasting through the first two weekends in October, “Autumn on the Farms” programming will feature different seasonal activities and provide guests with the opportunity to participate in traditional fall farm chores.

“We will be plowing the fields, harvesting the grains and making plans for how to prepare and preserve the bounty for the coming winter,” said Dan Freas, site director at Old World Wisconsin. “Guests will have the opportunity to pick up an historic recipe card to inspire their own culinary adventure.”

A complete list of dates and activities are below:

– September 9-10: Harvest Bounty Weekend. The kitchen will become a wonderland of herbs, vegetables and grains from the newly plowed fields.
– September 16 – 17: Potions, Poultices and Preparations. The gardens provide us food for summer and winter, but they also provide us with medicines, dyes and cleaners. Help dry herbs and make your own poultice.
– September 23-24: Comfort Food Weekend. When the weather starts to turn colder, we all start to think about comfort foods from spätzle to pierogis, dumplings to samosas. We will be cooking up our favorite historic comfort foods and sharing the recipes. We will explore how food ties us together.
– September 30-October 1: Pickles, Preserve and Fermentation. Join us as we prepare sauerkraut, make pickles of all kinds, and prepare delicious heritage, seasonal dishes.
– October 7-8: Chop, Chop Weekend. The farmhands will be cutting logs into lumber at the sawmill, draft horses will be out in the fields and at the ethnic farmsteads you can see traditional butchering.
– Oct 14-15: Sweet Send Off. We will be making sausage, smoking meats and making homemade donuts and pies.

Wisconsin Historical Society members receive free admission to Old World Wisconsin and all the twelve sites and museums across the state. The standard price of admission for Old World Wisconsin will apply all weekend: adults (18-64) $19; children (5-17) $10; seniors (65 & older) $16. Fees include an all-day tram transportation pass.
