MILWAUKEE – Airbnb announced today that the Milwaukee Airbnb host community will earn over $222,000 in supplemental income during the week of the U.S. Open.

This week, Milwaukee hosts will welcome over 2,000 guests through the Airbnb home sharing platform. This represents by far the largest surge of Airbnb guests to Milwaukee in the history of the platform. It’s a 100% spike over the week prior in Milwaukee and a projected 175% spike over the following week.

This economic infusion comes with Milwaukee hotels largely selling out and spiking prices by 80%. The growth of home sharing in Milwaukee is allowing the City to utilize pre-existing resources – people’s homes – to expand lodging capacity and retain as many visitors as possible. And importantly, prices for Airbnb listings in Milwaukee have remained largely consistent even with such a large event coming to the region. The typical nightly price for a Milwaukee Airbnb listing this week is $85, compared to a projected $83 the week after the Open.

“Home sharing is allowing the Milwaukee region to substantially expand lodging capacity and take full economic advantage of the U.S. Open,” said Laura Spanjian, Airbnb Midwest Policy Director. “Our host community is stepping up in a big way to serve as ambassadors for their city as the eyes of the sporting world turn to Wisconsin.”

Other cities within proximity to Erin Hills that are experiencing Airbnb spikes this week include West Bend (25 Airbnb guests, 60% spike) and Wauwatosa (80 Airbnb guests, 100% spike).

This economic infusion comes on the heels of last week’s announcement of a tax agreement that will allow Airbnb to collect and remit taxes on behalf of all of its Wisconsin hosts.
