MADISON – Greg Piefer, founder and chief executive officer of SHINE Medical Technologies, will discuss SHINE’s journey from a campus medical physics laboratory to federal approval of a production plant at the April 26 meeting of the Tech Council’s Wisconsin Innovation Network in Madison.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission recently approved SHINE’s plans to build a 57,000-square-foot facility in Janesville, the result of more than four years of data collection, safety analysis and regulatory review. It marks the first time in more than 50 years that a medical isotope of this kind has been granted approval from the NRC.

The luncheon will be held at the Sheraton Hotel on Madison’s John Nolen Drive. Registration and networking begin at 11:30 a.m., lunch at noon and the presentation at 12:30 p.m. The cost is $25 for WIN members, $35 for non-members and included with WIN corporate memberships.

SHINE is working to produce a more reliable supply of Molybdenum-99 (moly-99), the most commonly used isotope in nuclear medicine. Moly-99 is the parent isotope of technetium-99m (99mTc), a light-emitting element that is administered to some 55,000 Americans every day for the purpose of diagnosing and staging a multitude of diseases, including cancer and heart disease.

SHINE is Wisconsin-based company rooted at the UW-Madison. Chancellor Rebecca Blank will introduce Piefer and SHINE, which proposes to replace existing moly-99 production systems over time – touching millions of lives in the process.
“The story of SHINE is a great example of how a campus innovation found its way into a city and a region that was open to accepting new business opportunities,” said Tom Still, president of the Wisconsin Technology Council.

This WIN-Madison event is sponsored by BMO Harris Bank and the UW-Madison Office of Corporate Relations.

WIN is the statewide membership arm of the Tech Council, the independent, non-profit science and technology adviser to the governor and the Legislature. To join WIN, go to www.wisconsintechnologycouncil.com or call the office at 608-442-7557.
