August 6, 2015–The peak of tomato season is ramping up. Vine-ripe, sweet and juicy tomatoes are already loading up the tables at The Dane County Farmers’ Market (DCFM). Market patrons can preserve the taste of summer by learning how to capture the flavor and goodness of tomatoes from their favorite DCFM seller.
Master food preserver Polly Reott of Polly Jane’s Pickles and Jams leads the DCFM’s Tomato Preservation Series in the training kitchen at FEED Kitchens, 1219 Sherman Avenue in Madison.
The DCFM’s three-session series includes:
1. Tuesday, August 25th @ 6pm: Tomato Canning Demonstration Class. Demonstrating boiling water bath tomato canning. Cost: $29.
2. Tuesday, September 8th @ 6pm: Tomato Canning Workshop. Hands on workshop learning how to can tomatoes. Take away: a jar of canned tomatoes produced by the participants. Cost: $39.
3. Tuesday, September 15th @ 6pm: Freezing and Drying Tomato Workshop. Demonstrating dehydration and freezing techniques. Take away: a bag of tomatoes ready for freezing. Cost: $29.
Informative hand-outs walk students through each process and help them do it correctly when they make their first batch at home. All supplies are provided, including fresh tomatoes from the Dane County Farmers’ Market.
Students who sign up for all three tomato preservation classes at one time receive the discounted price of $89, a savings of over eight percent off the full price of $97.Students can register at the DCFM On-Line Store or by visiting the DCFM website. DCFM gift certificates can also be purchased at the on-line store.
Participants will enjoy cheese, beverages, and other refreshments provided by DCFM members during this fun learning experience. Most importantly they’ll enjoy tomatoes from the DCFM through the fall and all winter long by learning the art of food preservation.
The DCFM is the largest producer-only farmers’ market in the nation. During the summer it is held rain or shine each Saturday from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm on the Capitol Square, in Madison, WI.
