DOJ: Schimel announces new Crime Labs Director

MADISON – Attorney General Brad Schimel today announced the promotion of Jana Champion to the position of Crime Laboratory Director for the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

Champion is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the three crime laboratories in Wisconsin. She has been with the Wisconsin DOJ for 28 years.

Champion started her career with the Drug Enforcement Administration in Chicago. She then came to the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory system in 1987 as a controlled substance analyst. In 1996 Champion was appointed the Chemistry Supervisor for the Chemistry Section which included: Controlled Substances, Toxicology and Trace Identification units. She also served as the system-wide Quality Assurance Coordinator for the three laboratories. In 2006, Champion was appointed the Laboratory Director of the WI State Crime Laboratory-Milwaukee and in 2012, became Deputy Director of the Crime Laboratory Bureau.

She has her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Mount Mary University.
