PORT OF GREEN BAY SHIPPING SEASON GETS UNDERWAY

First ship contest winner announced

(Green Bay) – The first ship of the 2015 shipping season has arrived – and a lot earlier than last year! The Michigan – Great Lakes arrived in the Port of Green Bay from Cheboygan, Michigan on Friday, April 3 at 5:30 p.m. where it exported gasoline from the U.S. Oil terminal.

“The arrival of the first ship is 15 days earlier than last year,” said Dean Haen, director of Port & Resource Recovery. “The S.S. Alpena also came in over the weekend, which shows that materials are in demand and that it’s going to be another busy shipping season.”

The season’s first ship also means the Port has a winner in the annual First Ship Contest, sponsored by the Port of Green Bay and hosted by the Greater Green Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau. This year’s winner is Jesse DePrey of Brussels. Jesse guessed an arrival time of April 3 at 7:30 p.m. DePrey will receive a prize package that includes passage for two (2) on the S.S. Badger Lake Michigan Carferry, a Michigan Travel Guide and a $25 gift card to the Courthouse Pub in Manitowoc.

“This is just a fun way to get people interested in the shipping season,” Haen said. “Now, people are excited to see a ship come into port. They want to know where it came from, what its carrying. That was our goal.”

The Port of Green Bay expects more than 200 vessels in port during the 2015 shipping season. The Green Bay Press-Gazette “port of call” feature will highlight each ship’s arrival and include information on the ship’s size, cargo, arrival date and flag.

The public is encouraged to view the ships from the Fox River Trail, the Green Bay Metropolitan Boat Launch or from the Port’s web cam on its website (www.portofgreenbay.com). Port security requirements do not allow public access on any port property. You can also find more information about the Port of Green Bay and expected ship arrivals on www.portofgreenbay.com.
