APPLETON — An “Investors’ Edge” workshop outlining the best practices and trends in investing in startup companies will be held Sept. 18 at the Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton.

Produced by the Wisconsin Angel Network, the workshop will be delivered by the national Angel Resource Institute, and can help new or experienced Wisconsin investors learn more about angel investing and make sure their next deal is on par with the latest market trends. It is based on the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation’s Power of Angel Investing series.

The workshop will be led by Robert Okabe, a Chicago investor who has been actively involved with early stage enterprises on multiple levels for more than 15 years. Okabe, the board director for the Angel Resource Institute and the managing director of RPX Group LLC, was a co-founder of Prairie Angels in Chicago and an affiliated fund.

Okabe has led similar programs all over the world, and has lectured at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and was an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois.

The event, to run from 11:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Sept. 18, will be hosted by the Fox Valley Technical College’s D.J. Bordini Center, 5 N. Systems Dr. Room 103 in Appleton. The cost, which includes lunch, a reception and a 50-plus page workbook, is $40 for Wisconsin Angel Network and Wisconsin Innovation Network members and $75 for non-members.

The workshops have been delivered across the United States and North America, with investors attending similar events in New Orleans, Columbus, Ohio and Quebec City, Canada, among other locations.

Taught in an interactive classroom-style format, the half day of content will include: Analyzing the capital raising environment; meeting investor expectations; current valuation methodologies and best practices in deal structuring.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to provide updates and hear the latest data, trends and best practices from other experienced investors.

The Wisconsin Angel Network serves as a “network of networks” for angel and other investors in Wisconsin. Created in late 2004 as a program of the Wisconsin Technology Council, it has grown from a handful of established investment groups to more than 20 locations across Wisconsin. Members include venture capital firms, corporate strategic partners and investors outside Wisconsin who sometimes co-invest in state deals.
