EXCITEMENT BUILDS FOR THE CONTINENTAL TIRE
ROAD RACE SHOWCASE AT ROAD AMERICA
ELKHART LAKE, Wis., July 30, 2014 – One of the biggest racing events in Wisconsin returns August 7-10 as the newly titled “Continental Tire Road Race Showcase” brings in some of the top racers in the world to tackle America’s National Park of Speed. The weekend will include the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge on Saturday and the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race on Sunday, plus races from the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge, IMSA Prototype Lites and the Mazda MX-5 Cup.
Last year Lucas Luhr and Klaus Graf rolled to their fifth consecutive TUDOR United SportsCar victory on Sunday, holding on after a surprisingly strong challenge by the DeltaWing LM12 in its best showing to date. The race featured a pair of TUDOR milestones. The DeltaWing led for the first time — leading twice for 16 laps — while the SRT Viper took its first factory-backed victory since New Year’s Eve in 2000 when Dominick Farnbacher and Marc Goossens won a tight GT battle in the No. 91 Viper GTS-R. The DeltaWing team will bring a new coupe version of the revolutionary racer to Road America, following a fire at the recent TUDOR Championship event at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park that destroyed the chassis.
Everything begins on Thursday with test sessions for all the classes from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Practice and qualifying takes up the majority of the day on Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:40 p.m., and there will be no shortage of things to do for fans on Friday afternoon. From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a fan forum at the Road America Center. After all the qualifying and practices are done the evening is filled with awesome activities. The Tour de Road America kicks off the evening at 6 p.m., where fans will get a chance to bike around the track with proceeds going to cancer research. Then at 7 p.m., the band Copper Box will play live music at the Road America Center and the ‘Party in the Park’ is included with every event ticket. Also happening is an auction to benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation, plus all weekend there will be public karting at the Blain’s Farm & Fleet Motorplex. As part of its Race to Feed the Hungry promotion, Road America is offering $10 off gate admission if more than $5 of non-perishable; non-expired food is donated per ticket holder.
Saturday is an action packed day full of world-class racing. The feature race will be the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge at 12:15 p.m. Earlier on Saturday will be the Cooper Tires Prototype Lites race at 10:40 a.m. Practice and qualifying for the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race fills the afternoon as the best sports car racers in the world will be looking to get a good starting position for Sunday.
Sunday is just as exciting as Saturday with Cooper Tires Prototype Lites racing early in the morning and IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge racing later in the morning. Fans will have plenty to look forward to with autograph sessions, parade laps, and a chance to get up-close to the cars on the front straightaway before the afternoon action begins. The TUDOR United SportsCar Championship Continental Tire 245 hits the twists and turns of Road America at 1:15 p.m., with some of the best sports cars and drivers in the world looking for a win on the revered 4-mile, 14-turn road course. The race will air on Fox Sports 1 at 5:30 p.m. central time on Sunday.
