MADISON – Gov. Jim Doyle announced today a $500,000 Department of Commerce
grant to the City of Neenah to clean up a contaminated brownfields site in
their downtown, and create 336 jobs.
“With this grant, we will help the City of Neenah clean up this contaminated
brownfields site, develop office space, and enhance public access to the Fox
River,” Gov. Doyle said. “I am pleased that the state is able to help
Neenah revitalize its downtown and create more than 300 jobs for the
community.”
“When all levels of government work in partnership with the private sector,
we can turn obstacles into opportunities and progress,” said Neenah Mayor
George Schereck. “This grant will help the effort to reclaim a
contaminated, underutilized brownfields site and convert it to a vital
commercial property.”
“We’re all working toward a common goal with this project – the betterment
of our community,” said Jim Beré, Chairman and CEO of Alta Resources. “This
grant will help Alta Resources and the City of Neenah continue to enhance
the downtown environment, making Neenah an ideal location for businesses of
all sizes.”
Once the site work is complete, the City of Neenah will develop an office
center and parking ramp on the site. Alta Resources Corporation, a
customer-care solutions provider, will occupy the seven-story office center.
The total investment in this project is $31.4 million.
Commerce’s Brownfields Program, provides grants to municipalities, local
development corporations, and the private sector to support assessment,
remediation and return of contaminated lands to productive use. Brownfields
are abandoned, idle or underused industrial or commercial properties where
redevelopment is hindered by real or perceived contamination. For more
