Veterinary Emergency Service and Veterinary Specialty Center, with urgent care facilities open 24/7 in Middleton and Southeast Madison, earned a Dane County Small Business Award for integrity, state-of-the art care for household pets, as well as volunteer and charitable efforts. Veterinarian David Wirth, founder and medical director, opened the Veterinary Emergency Service in 2003 to provide state-of the art emergency care and to provide referrals for veterinarians in Dane County whose clinics are not open 24/7. It is the only private practice in Madison with an oncologist and internal medicine specialist on staff.

Veterinary Emergency Service supports the work of area animal-related nonprofits including providing health care to police dogs at no cost through the Madison K9 program.
