University of Phoenix Recognizes Teacher of the Year with an Opportunity to “Teach It Forward”

MILWAUKEE, March 28, 2012 – Every day, teachers change the lives of the students in their classrooms. Recently, Maureen Look-Ainsworth, a middle school teacher in the Milwaukee area, also changed the life of Elisabeth Buhrow with a full-tuition scholarship to University of Phoenix.

Look-Ainsworth is one of more than 50 educators across the country recognized by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) as a 2011 State Teacher of the Year. Each year, since 1952, students, teachers and administrators have nominated their favorite educators for this award, which is considered the oldest and most prestigious national program recognizing excellence in teaching.

To celebrate these achievements, University of Phoenix is providing every State Teacher of the Year recipient the opportunity to teach forward a full-tuition scholarship. The “Teaching It Forward” scholarship program was created by University of Phoenix in 2009. Teachers who have been selected as the 2011 CCSSO State Teacher of the Year may nominate a fellow educator, community member or high school senior who resides within the educator’s state for a full-tuition scholarship that can be applied to an undergraduate or graduate degree online or at any University of Phoenix local campus.

The 2011 Wisconsin Teacher of the Year, Look-Ainsworth, has chosen Buhrow to receive the full-tuition scholarship.

“This scholarship demonstrates the University’s commitment to ‘Teaching It Forward’ so that deserving students in every state have the opportunity to pursue higher education,” said Maureen Look-Ainsworth, 2011 Wisconsin Teacher of the Year. “I’m thrilled to be able to help Elisabeth pursue her dreams through higher education because of this innovative program.”

Buhrow, the scholarship recipient chosen by Look-Ainsworth, intends to pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology at University of Phoenix Milwaukee Campus. Buhrow, who is currently balancing two jobs in addition to her course load, was drawn to the University’s flexible degree programs.

“The flexible class schedule University of Phoenix offers allows me to balance all of my responsibilities including school, work and family, successfully,” said Burhow. “I’m thankful to Ms. Look-Ainsworth for providing me with this opportunity to pursue a higher education in an environment that suits my learning style and my life.”
