Sustainable Engineering Group: Projects earn top honors at annual Sustainability and Energy Efficiency Awards

MADISON, Wis., Nov. 11, 2010 — Three of Sustainable Engineering Group’s recent projects have earned top honors at the Wisconsin Green Building Alliance’s annual Sustainability and Energy Efficiency, or SE2, Awards. It is the third year in a row that building projects the Madison-based firm consulted on won SE2 Awards, which are presented annually to recognize leadership in energy efficient and sustainable design, construction and operation of non-residential buildings.

“All of us at Sustainable Engineering Group are gratified by the awards we share with our design and construction partners on three new highly sustainable and energy efficient building projects,” said Manus McDevitt, a principal of the firm. “From a fire station to school buildings to a monastery, each of these projects serves as a model for innovative, high-performance buildings that place sustainability and energy efficiency as a priority, and generate substantial resource savings as a result. The diversity of Sustainable Engineering Group building projects that earned an SE2 Award this year speaks both to our firm’s broad range of capabilities, and to how sustainable and energy efficient design principles can be applied to virtually any building.”

The City of Madison’s Fire Station No. 12 won the top SE² award in 2010, the Award of Excellence. The city incorporated sustainable technologies in the building that addresses waste reduction, energy efficiency, water efficiency, storm water management and indoor environmental quality. Sustainable Engineering Group provided Commissioning services during the design and construction of the new fire station on Madison’s far west side.

The firm served as the geothermal designer for the Benedictine Women of Madison’s Holy Wisdom Monastery renovation, which earned an SE2 Award of Merit. The building’s green features include special roofing to decrease heat islands, a geothermal heating and cooling system, and photovoltaic cells that generate electricity for 13% of the building’s total energy needs. The monastery also has the honor of being named the “Greenest Building in the Nation” by the U.S. Green Building Council, the developer of the LEED building certification system.

The Fort Atkinson School District also earned an Award of Merit for its retrofitting of four schools in the six-school district with geothermal heating and cooling systems and the installation of a solar hot water system for its swimming pools, eliminating the need for district’s old, inefficient steam boilers. Sustainable Engineering Group provided geothermal system retro-commissioning services and energy efficiency consulting services to the district during the project.
