Prestigious award announced as local attorney settles $20 million Wisconsin case

Madison – For the second year in a row, Best Lawyers, the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession, has named Daniel A. Rottier, of Habush Habush & Rottier, S.C., as the “Madison Best Lawyers Personal Injury Litigator of the Year.”

The award was announced just as Rottier settled a case for $20 million, awarded to a family in Appleton whose 4-year-old girl suffered severe and permanent injuries from a vehicle collision, including blindness and traumatic epilepsy. The settlement is the largest in Outagamie County history and one of the largest settlements in Wisconsin this year. It covers the anticipated costs of 24-hour care for the rest of the girl’s life. Because the settlement involved a minor, it required approval by judge, which was granted on Monday, Nov. 1 by an Outagamie County Judge.

“The settlement approved today can never make up for the devastating and tragic injuries suffered by this child and her family,” said Rottier, attorney for the child’s family, “but it is comforting to know that now the family will be able to adequately care for their daughter throughout her life.”

Only a single lawyer in each legal specialty in each community is honored as the “Lawyer of the Year.” Best Lawyers compiles its lists of outstanding attorneys by conducting exhaustive peer-review surveys in which thousands of leading lawyers confidentially evaluate their professional peers. The current, 17th edition of The Best Lawyers in America (2011) is based on more than 3.1 million detailed evaluations of lawyers by other lawyers. The lawyers being honored as “Lawyers of the Year” have received particularly high ratings in the surveys by earning a high level of respect among their peers for their abilities, professionalism, and integrity.

“We continue to believe – as we have believed for more than 25 years – that recognition by one’s peers is the most meaningful form of praise in the legal profession,” said Steven Naifeh, President of Best Lawyers. “We would like to congratulate Daniel A. Rottier on being selected as the ‘Madison Best Lawyers Personal Injury Litigator of the Year’ for 2011.”

Rottier received his degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1976. He was elected a Fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers in 1990, a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1994, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Trial Advocates in 1990. He has been certified as a Civil Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy since 1982 and is also a Fellow of the Wisconsin Law Foundation.
