Groundbreaking marks addition of 15,000+ square feet to facility

Cherney Microbiological Services, Ltd. will break ground on an expansion that will approximately triple the physical size of its Green Bay facility and allow the firm to better serve a growing customer base. Cherney Microbiological Services, Ltd. is located on the northeast side of Green Bay in the I-43 Industrial Park at 1110 S. Huron Rd and the expansion will be on the current site.

Cherney Microbiological Services, Ltd., owned by Debra and Marvin Cherney, is one of Wisconsin’s top firms specializing in microbiological testing and technical support for manufacturing companies. The firm started in 1989 in the Green Bay Chamber of Commerce Small Business Incubator Complex and expanded several times before relocating in 2000 to the current site. The firm currently employs 46 people in microbiology, chemistry, laboratory technology, and support functions.

“Our customer base is growing and we have added new services and employees to meet that demand,” said Debra Cherney, President and Director of Microbiology. “Our new building will allow us the room to grow with our customers and continue to provide the speed and accuracy they demand.”

The expansion will result in a state-of-the-art laboratory, designed with functionality, safety and performance in mind. “Every part of Cherney’s operation will gain valuable square footage for increased capacity” says Cherney. For example, Cherney’s chemistry department will grow by 300%. Departments that support the microbiological testing function of the laboratory will also grow substantially. “We have redesigned our laboratory layout using Lean and Six Sigma concepts as guidelines. We are implementing ‘green concepts’ to reduce waste and energy consumption as our part to help the environment.”

This year, the firm was approved for accreditation by the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) in the Biological field of testing. Laboratory accreditation is a means of determining the technical competence of a laboratory. Cherney’s Quality Management System has been evaluated and deemed in compliance with the International Standard ISO/IEC 17025:2005. Preparation for the assessment ensured that laboratory procedures, controls, and documentation were in compliance with both management and technical requirements. Cherney Microbiological Services, Ltd. is the only science-based, woman-owned business enterprise in Wisconsin to achieve this internationally respected benchmark.

Groundbreaking for the new facility will be at 11 am, Thursday, November 4th.
