Wisconsin NFIB Joins State Restaurant Association to Endorse Scott Walker for Governor

MADISON (Oct. 21, 2010) – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the state’s leading advocate for small businesses, today joined the Wisconsin Restaurant Association in endorsing Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker for Governor.

“Scott Walker has an outstanding track record as Milwaukee County Executive and as a former member of the State Legislature from 1995-2002 where he consistently supported the small business agenda. We believe that he has the right plan for boosting the economy and creating jobs,” said Wisconsin State Director Bill G. Smith.

Smith noted that as County Executive, Walker’s “brown bag” philosophy of governing has resulted in a stable tax rate for eight consecutive years, a smaller public workforce, lower public debt, a higher bond rating and numerous awards for outstanding services.

“Scott believes that smaller government is better government and that small business is the engine of job growth,” said Smith. “Our members agree with that philosophy and they are enthusiastic about his candidacy.”

Central to Walker’s campaign is his pledge to reduce state taxes, streamline the regulatory process and crack down on frivolous lawsuits. He is also proposing to implement zero-based budgeting for Wisconsin, under which every program will be scrutinized every year to determine whether it should survive.

“He wants to run state government the way our members run their businesses, which is exactly what we need to get the state’s economy growing,” said Smith.

Walker, a Republican, is running against Democrat Tom Barrett, the Mayor of Milwaukee with close union ties.

Barrett’s plan for the economy features more government spending and stimulus-type projects, ideas that have been tried and flopped nationally and in Wisconsin.

“Scott Walker has targeted the small business community for immediate tax relief because he understands the key role small business plays in job creation and economic growth.

“Scott Walker has exactly the right answers and a successful track record to back them up,” continued Smith.
