Founded in Fitchburg, 9th annual Du Run Run fosters fitness, camaraderie for special cause
MADISON, Wis. — Area kids, ages 2 through 10, are invited to gear up and break a sweat for Special Olympics Wisconsin by competing in the Summit Credit Union Du Run Run kids’ duathlon at McKee Farms Park in Fitchburg, Wis., on Sun., Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Kids will run, bike and then run again on courses and in heats that vary by age and gender in support of the more than 1,600 athletes with cognitive disabilities in the Madison area. Registration fees for the Du Run Run are $15 per child for the first two children registered and $10 for each additional child.
All child participants will receive the official 2010 Du Run Run t-shirt, a participation ribbon and an opportunity to stand on the podiums to have their photos taken. Medals will be presented to the first, second and third place finishers in each age group. Local mascots, including Bucky Badger, will be cheering for the participants as they cross the finish line.
Children will also be invited to participate in a children’s workshop sponsored by Home Depot, jump in a bouncy castle, see fire trucks and get their faces painted. My Menu, a sponsor of the Fitchburg event this year, will be donating a portion of the proceeds from sales during the event to Special Olympics Wisconsin.

History of DuRunRun:
The statewide fundraiser was created by IronMan competitor and Fitchburg resident, Brendan Connelly, along with his wife Nancy, as a way to promote fun and general physical fitness among local youth. The duathlon began in 2001 at McKee Farms Park in Fitchburg with 126 participants. Sponsored by American Family Insurance, the Du Run Run is held in Fitchburg and La Crosse, Wis., and has raised more than $80,000 for Special Olympics.
