MADISON, Wis. — The Western Wisconsin Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) has named Kim Sponem, President of Summit Credit Union, to serve as the 2010 Corporate Chair for its annual Walk to Cure Diabetes.

The Walk will be held at Warner Park on Sun., Sept. 26, 2010, and has a fundraising goal of $360,000. More than 1,500 people participated in the event last year, raising over $810,000 for diabetes research.

“Summit has been involved with JDRF since 2001, and I look forward to continuing our involvement by serving as Corporate Chair for its flagship fundraising event, the Walk to Cure Diabetes,” said Sponem. “Each year more than 15,000 children are diagnosed with diabetes in the U.S. — that’s 40 children per day. Diabetes and its complications cost more than $174 billion dollars a year in the U.S. alone. JDRF works locally and around the world to reduce these numbers, and we hope, eventually find a cure. That’s why Summit is committed to raising money for cutting-edge research. By working together, we can make a difference.”

The annual Walk to Cure Diabetes, held in 220 cities nationwide, is the fastest growing fund raising event in the history of JDRF. Funds are raised through corporate sponsorships, the formation of corporate and family walk teams and the sales of paper sneakers in retail outlets.
