MADISON—The Civil War produced the generation that most shaped Wisconsin’s collective character and identity, eventually transforming the Midwest Region into a mature and creative society. But how did it happen and what role did Abraham Lincoln play in the process?

As part of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters Academy Evenings series of public lectures, and in partnership with the Mead Public Library, historian and author Kerry Trask will discuss Coming of Age: Lincoln, the Civil War, and the Transformation of Wisconsin and the Midwest. This Academy Evenings presentation will be held from 7:00–8:30 pm on Tuesday, April 27, at the Mead Public Library, 710 N. 8th Street, Sheboygan. Doors open at 6:15 pm. Seating is first-come, first-served.

Kerry Trask teaches history at the University of Wisconsin–Manitowoc. He has written three books: In the Pursuit of Shadows: Massachusetts Millennialism and the Seven Years War (Garland Publishers, 1989), The Fire Within: A Civil War Narrative from Wisconsin (Kent State University Press, 1995), and Black Hawk: The Battle for the Heart of America (Henry Holt & Co., 2005). He is also the reviews editor for Voyageur: Northeast Wisconsin’s Historical Review. Trask was inducted as a Wisconsin Academy Fellow in 2008. A native of Ontario, Canada, he earned his BA in history from Hamline University in St. Paul, and his MA and PhD in history from the University of Minnesota.
