Event to Raise Awareness and Funds for Dyslexia

Madison, Wis. (March 9, 2010) — The Madison Masonic Learning Center is now accepting registration and pledges for its first annual Walk for Dyslexia. The event will take place on Saturday, May 22, 2010, with registration at 7:30 AM. The 5K walk will start at 8:30 AM at the Shelter House at Henry Vilas Park (606 South Randall Avenue). Registration fees are $15 for adults and $5 for children under 12. The event will also feature several family friendly activities. All funds raised from the walk will support tutoring services for children with dyslexia in the greater Madison area.

The Madison Masonic Learning Center offers one-on-one tutoring to help students meet their full educational potential in reading, writing, and spelling. The Learning Center teaches students to become independent, lifelong learners and to gain both skill and confidence in their ability to succeed in school.

All tutors are certified in the Orton-Gillingham model, a multi-sensory approach that uses phonetics to emphasize visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles to read, write, and spell. Under this approach, children are taught how to process language and how to read all over again and progress is made in small, readily quantifiable steps.

Madison Masonic Learning Center: The Madison Masonic Learning Center is one of 45 Scottish Rite Masons 32° Learning Centers across 15 states helping children overcome their learning difficulties. The center in Madison opened in 2001 to meet the needs of children struggling with dyslexia. The Learning Center’s tutoring helps students with dyslexia to gain skill and confidence, become independent learners, and achieve their full educational potential in reading, writing, and spelling. The center serves students between the ages of 7 and 18 at no cost to the students or their families. In its nine years, the Learning Center has graduated 82 students
