The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point spring colloquium series on renewable wood resources for energy continues with a lecture by Bob Govett, who will present “Boiler Basics – Comparative Energy Potential and Costs” on Wednesday, February 17.

The lecture is free and open to the public and will be held at 4 p.m. in Room 120 of the Trainer Natural Resources Building.

Govett, wood utilization extension specialist and professor in the College of Natural Resources, will discuss the steam cycle, the key elements of basic boiler design and operation, the differences in using boilers for dedicated heat or power generation as compared to CHP (cogeneration), and the feasibility of using wood/bark fuel instead of various fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. He will use a real-world example from the recent analysis of the UWSP campus boiler, including an explanation of how differences in fuel moisture content affect the system and the overall analysis.

The next lecture will be Wed, March 3, with Jeff Plunkett of Domtar who will present “Cogeneration: Getting the Wood >From the Woodlot to the Power Plant.”

The series, co-sponsored by the College of Natural Resources and the biology department in the College of Letters and Science, is coordinated by John DuPlissis, forestry outreach specialist, 715-346-4128.
