Company Gives More Than $1 Million Annually to Madison-Area Organizations

MADISON, Wis. – The CUNA Mutual Foundation has renewed $260,000 in first-quarter grants to non-profit organizations in the Madison area, including $185,000 to KinderReady, a program CUNA Mutual helped launch in 2007.

The $260,000 represents approximately one quarter of the total contributions, through grants and sponsorships, CUNA Mutual will give to local organizations and causes in 2010.

Administered by the Children’s Service Society of Wisconsin, the KinderReady program has received more than $820,000 from the CUNA Mutual Foundation since its inception in 2007. The KinderReady grant will go toward helping prepare more than 200 Dane County children for kindergarten.

“All of these grants renew our long-term commitments to several non-profit initiatives that we feel add significant value to our community, especially in support of young people in greatest need,” said Steve Goldberg, executive director of the CUNA Mutual Foundation.

The CUNA Mutual Foundation is also renewing grants to the following organizations:

* A $15,000 grant to Youth Services of Southern Wisconsin for its Project HUGS middle-school alcohol abuse intervention pilot project.

* Big Brothers/Big Sisters will receive $15,000 to continue its Darbo/Worthington Neighborhood Outreach initiative, which the CUNA Mutual Foundation has underwritten since 2003.

* YWCA of Madison will receive $10,000 for its Second Chance Workshop Series, which provides training and mentoring for homeless women and their families.

* Three organizations received grants of $10,000 each: Urban League of Greater Madison, for its Project REACH teen employment and financial literacy program; Boys & Girls Club of Dane County for Job Ready, which provides employment and money management training for teens; Common Wealth Development, for its award-winning Youth Financial Education program.

* A $5,000 grant to United Way’s Youth Resource Centers Network to support after-school tutoring services.
