MADISON – The National Collegiate Cycling Association (NCCA) announced that the cycling team at the University of Wisconsin-Madison won the bid to host the 2010 and 2011 Collegiate Road National Championship races.
“Our team has been tirelessly vying for this bid for several months,” cycling team president Jason Carr says. “To see that USA Cycling recognized Madison as the premier collegiate cycling venue in the nation speaks to our bicycle-friendly atmosphere, our immense community support and our progressive bicycling agenda that is our city, our state and our university.”
The NCCA is a division of USA Cycling, which is the U.S. branch of the International Cycling Union.
The national championship, from May 7-9, will include a road race, possibly on the proposed 2016 Chicago Olympic course, a criterium through downtown Madison, and a team time trial at a location yet to be determined. The nearly 300 teams and estimated 800 athletes will lodge, dine and shop in downtown Madison.
Wauwatosa based Team Sports Inc., a cycling event management company, will serve as the event promoter and will provide logistical support for the event. Additionally, the Greater Madison Convention and Visitors Bureau will help coordinate efforts with both the city and local businesses. The cycling team is working closely with both Team Sports Inc. and the visitors’ bureau to ensure a successful event.
“We’ve enjoyed the support of Mayor Dave Cieslewicz, the UW-Madison Division of Recreational Sports and others in the bidding process. It is an honor to be selected from among other top-notch schools and cities in the nation to host this event,” Carr says.
