Ultimate Players Association: 2010 UPA College Championships awarded to Madison, Wis.

BOULDER, Colo. – The Ultimate Players Association, the National Governing Body for the sport of Ultimate in the United States, today announced the 2010 UPA College Championships will take place from May 28-31, 2010 in Madison, Wis. The event, which annually crowns the Division I men’s and women’s Ultimate national champions, will be hosted by the Madison Ultimate Frisbee Association (MUFA) with assistance from the Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB).

The tournament will be held at the Redden Soccer Complex from Friday, May 28 through Sunday, May 30, with the finals taking place at Breese Stevens Field on Monday, May 31. Kate Arnold (Madison, Wis.) will serve as Tournament Director on behalf of MUFA.

“The UPA College Championships is our highest profile tournament and Madison is a fitting venue as one of the premier college Ultimate hotbeds in the country,” said UPA Managing Director, Competition & Athlete Programs Will Deaver (Boulder, Colo.). “We are confident of another tremendously successful event with the Madison Ultimate Frisbee Association serving as our local organizing committee, along with the added support of the Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau and the University of Wisconsin’s Ultimate clubs.”

Following the 2010 college regular season, more than 11,000 student-athletes on over 650 teams will begin competing in early April as part of the 2010 UPA College Championship Series. Less than two months later the top 20 men’s and 20 women’s college Ultimate teams from across North America will advance to Madison.

“Madison boasts a long history in the sport of Ultimate, having previously hosted events such as the 1991 UPA College Championships and the 1993 World Flying Disc Federation Ultimate World Championship,” said MUFA President Brad Wendt (Madison, Wis.). “It may even be possible that former participants in those events will have a son or daughter competing here next Memorial Day weekend.”

“The Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau is excited to be hosting the UPA College Championships in 2010. This is a terrific opportunity to showcase Madison to visitors coming from around the country,” said GMCVB Vice President of Operations Tim Hyland (Madison, Wis.). “With Madison’s natural affinity for athletics, and the community’s support and passion for Ultimate, we are confident that the student-athletes, families and fans will find our city to be the perfect destination for this event.”
