American Needlepoint Guild: Free needlepointing stitching event welcomes beginners and experts

American Needlepoint Guild Welcomes Public to Events at Midwest Airlines Center

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – August 24, 2009 – They’re coming, needles in hand, and they want you to join them. From Aug. 28 through Sept. 4, hundreds of members of the American Needlepoint Guild (ANG) from the US, Canada and other countries will be in Milwaukee to learn from experts and to share the fruits of their labor with the public. Come to the public events and learn more about why needlepoint is such a popular and relaxing hobby for so many people.

Learn to Needlepoint for Free

On Sept. 2, ANG experts will host a free public stitching event to share their love of the craft with Milwaukee. The free “Stitch N Go” class will be held from 10:30 am – noon in room 101B at the Midwest Airlines Center (400 W. Wisconsin Avenue). Attendees will receive a complimentary starter kit to learn basic needlepoint stitches. The end-result can be used as an ornament, pin or lid for a small box. ANG members will assist attendees with projects. The kits will consist of canvas, threads, needle and instructions.

Free Exhibit

A free public needlework exhibit will be held at the Midwest Airlines Center with various types of needlework by members on display. Hours for the exhibit will be:

* Aug. 30 – from noon until 5 pm

* Aug. 31 through Sept. 3 – 10 am to 6 pm

* Sept. 4 – 9 am to noon

Shop and Bookstore

The public is welcome to visit a shop and bookstore also at the Midwest Airlines Center. The shop will carry an array of supplies of interest to enthusiasts, and the bookstore will offer a full line of new and pre-owned books on a range of techniques and topics associated with needlework. Hours for the shop and bookstore are:

* Aug. 28 – Noon to 6 pm

* Aug. 29 – 8 am to 6 pm

* Aug. 30 – 8 am to 5 pm

* Aug. 31 – Sept. 3 from 8 am until 6 pm

* Sept. 4 – 8 am until noon

Meet and Greet

A book signing will be held in the expo bookstore on Monday, Aug. 31 from 11:30 am – 2:00 pm. The featured author will be Amy Bunger, author of Amy’s Cookbook for Stitchers and owner of Amy’s Golden Strand in Memphis, Tenn. Bring in your book or DVD to be signed, or purchase one in the ANG bookstore.

About Needlepoint

According to the National Needle Arts Association report in 2007, there are more than 71,000 needlepointers in the US who together spend $98 million each year on the hobby. They also report that the needlearts – which includes crocheting, knitting and cross-stitch – have been growing in popularity.

No registration is required for any public events.
