Edgewood College and Corporate Report Wisconsin award recognizes environmental stewardship, community relations and customer appreciation

TOMAHAWK, Wis. — Plum Creek was recently honored with a 2009 Wisconsin Corporate Citizenship Award from Corporate Report Wisconsin and Edgewood College in Madison. The award recognizes Plum Creek’s outstanding achievements in environmental stewardship, community relations and customer appreciation. In all, seven Wisconsin companies received the award at an April 17 banquet at the college.

“This is truly a great honor, and Plum Creek is proud to be recognized with these other outstanding companies,” said Scott Henker, Plum Creek Lake States senior resource manager. “We thank the judges for helping validate the great things our employees do every day. We have a great team here in Wisconsin and nationwide that puts action behind our commitment to sustainable forestry, environmental stewardship and customer appreciation.”

This is the third year for the annual award program sponsored by Edgewood College and Corporate Report Wisconsin. A panel of four judges from Edgewood College reviewed nominations.

“The Wisconsin Corporate Citizenship Award recognizes and celebrates companies in Wisconsin that continue to make significant contributions to the state,” said Chuck Taylor, Dean of the School of Business at Edgewood College. “Plum Creek’s gift of leadership is to be commended, as the company truly is a good corporate citizen.”

The award recognized many efforts Plum Creek makes throughout the year, including:

* The company’s commitment to sustainability and conservation, like being named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, or DJSI World, an honor bestowed on only 300 companies worldwide; as well as being certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) program.

* Plum Creek’s wildlife protection efforts in Wisconsin. The company participates in a statewide Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) to protect the endangered Karner blue butterfly. The company also works with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the Wisconsin habitat that nurtures the Kirtland’s warbler, a rare and endangered songbird.

* Replanting efforts that Plum Creek undertakes every spring. In the last decade, Plum Creek has replanted nearly 15 million seedlings in Wisconsin. Nationwide, the company plants approximately 70 million each year.

* Efforts to give back to the communities where Plum Creek owns land. In 2008 alone, the Plum Creek Foundation awarded grants to 24 organizations around the state, totaling more than $80,000. The company also awarded $39,000 in scholarships in 2008 to deserving high school seniors in Wisconsin.

* The internship program through Plum Creek and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. College students interested in forestry train one-on-one with Plum Creek foresters to get hands-on work experience. Plum Creek also works with other educational groups to offer environmental education to children. In fact, Plum Creek won the Wisconsin Association for Environmental Education Dave Engleson Award in 2008 for its significant contributions to environmental education.

The six other companies that received a 2009 Wisconsin Corporate Citizenship Award are Professional Plating of Brillion, K-tech Kleening Systems of Weston, Industrial Towel and Uniform of New Berlin, Deloitte of Milwaukee, Ellenbecker Investment Group of Pewaukee and TDS of Madison.
