Women and Science Day will be held Friday, February 27, at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Almost 400 seventh and eighth grade girls from throughout Central and Northern Wisconsin will learn about careers in science and technology from campus and non-campus women professionals. The focus of the day is to expose the girls to opportunities for careers in science fields, according to Julie Hellweg of the UWSP Continuing Education Office.

The event will be held in the Dreyfus University Center Laird Room. Annie Wetter, associate professor of nutrition and dietetics will give the keynote address, “Fat Burning Zone: How Math and Science Apply to Every Day Decisions,” at 9:30 a.m.

Following the address, each participant attends three workshop breakouts where they receive hands-on instruction, and explore and learn from women experts in their fields. Presenters will include UWSP faculty members as well as K-12 teachers and regional professionals. The students will have opportunities to learn about many content areas including biology, astronomy, chemistry, psychology, medical investigation, nursing, aerospace, rocket launching, natural resources and more. Sessions will be held throughout the day at the Trainer Natural Resource building, the Science building, the College of Professional Studies building, the Health Enhancement Center and at the Dreyfus University Center.

The event began in 1989 and is sponsored by the College of Letters and Science and UWSP Continuing Education. More information is on the Web at http://www.uwsp.edu/conted/women_science or contact UWSP Continuing Education at 1-800-898-9472 or 715-346-3838.
