Security system meets the needs for center’s 3,300 births this year; Shawnee Mission Medical Center is first RF Technologies customer to host ACLS/OB Courses for Nurses and Clinical Instructors
BROOKFIELD, Wis., Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ — RF Technologies(R) has partnered with Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) to protect its infants and children from abduction and give family members peace of mind that their children are secure. SMMC has plans to install the latest upgrade to its Safe Place(R) Infant Security Solution, Software Version 5.0, in the near future. The Special Addition Birth Center at SMMC is a perfect candidate for the Safe Place Infant Security Solution. It is the busiest birth center in the Kansas City area.

The Safe Place Infant Security Solution protects infants within an assigned area. Security begins as soon as the nurse attaches the small, lightweight transmitter onto the infant’s ankle. Safe Place is designed for and by clinical nurses to be user-friendly and improve staff productivity. The technology increases efficiencies by centralizing information on a touch screen PC monitor, allowing for easy admit with an auto-enroll feature, and conveniently identifying and registering nurses into the system with card swipe and proximity readers. Safe Place allows the hospital to generate a variety of customized reports to help reduce alarms and be ready for Joint Commission reviews at the touch of a button.
“We are excited about the upcoming upgrade to Version 5.0 because the software is capable of running on our existing computer network,” said Debra Ohnoutka, Director of Women’s and Children’s Services at SMMC. “This will allow us to check and update Safe Place data on our tablet PCs bedside.” Version 5.0 software also includes a new Blue Alarm Equipment Containment feature that permits transmitters to be attached to medical equipment, alerting staff when equipment is being removed from a designated area.
RF Technologies and SMMC expanded their partnership by providing Advanced Cardiac Life Support training for pregnant or newly delivered patients (ACLS/OB). The training was offered to both SMMC’s and neighboring hospitals’ OB nursing staff. In total, three days of training were provided. The two-day provider course was underwritten by RF Technologies and hosted by SMMC. The course was taught by Teresa Stanfill, RNC, MSN, and Katie Schimmelpfennig, RNC, BSN, both Maternity Services Clinical Instructors at St. Luke’s Meridian Medical Center in Boise, Idaho. The ACLS/OB course implements the American Heart Association ACLS guidelines established in 2005. Upon completion of this course, the provider receives a standard AHA ACLS Provider Card. Continuing education contact hours will be awarded for the ACLS/OB Provider Course. Day three of the course is designed to prepare new Instructor Candidates to teach ACLS/OB courses.
The SMMC ACLS/OB presentation was the first of six regional courses to be sponsored by RF Technologies.
