During the most popular month for auto purchases, consumers should be aware of cost-saving safety features

MILWAUKEE – Experts recommend August as one of the best times to invest in a new car as it is when end-of-year models are heavily discounted. While you’re at the dealership trying to negotiate the lowest possible price, you should also consider how much your car insurance will cost.

West Bend wants to keep you safe on the roads by offering insight on the new technology and safety features that could lower your car insurance premium. While you may think safety features are exclusive only to luxury vehicles, economy cars are increasingly equipped with these features. Talk to your independent insurance agent to see if these safety features qualify your new car for a discount.

Forward Crash Avoidance – This system helps prevent crashes by alerting you when your vehicle is getting close to another auto or object and may automatically cause your car to brake in order to avoid a collision.

Lane Departure – Fatigue or distractions can cause you to inadvertently stray across lane markings. A lane departure warning system alerts you if this happens when your turn signal is not activated.

Blind Spot Monitoring – Changing lanes can be difficult, but a blind spot monitoring system alerts you to the presence of an auto, or other object, in your blind spot.

Backup Warning System – These systems are comprised of sensors and/or cameras that alert you to objects located behind the vehicle. These systems may also include an alert when traffic is approaching the vehicle from the side. These systems may or may not include automatic braking functionality.

Adaptive Headlights – These headlights will follow the path of the vehicle, adjusting the beam to the curve of the road, as well as the speed and steering angle of the auto. These new headlights may help you spot animals – like deer — that dart out onto the road.

Driver Fatigue Sensing System – This system will monitor your steering patterns and other behaviors to detect a lack of attention and/or potential drowsiness. You will typically be alerted by vibrations in the steering wheel or seat, or with audible warnings.

When shopping for your next car, consider these safety features that not only keep you safer on the roads, but may lower your auto insurance premium. For more information about insurance and for safety tips, visit the West Bend Cares blog.
