Madison – The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, a partner in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) WaterSense program, is promoting the ninth annual Fix a Leak Week March 20th through 26th this year. Fix a Leak Week helps raise awareness of the more than 1 trillion gallons of water wasted due to household leaks across the country each year. This amount could supply 11 million homes with water.

“Finding and repairing even minor leaks associated with leaky faucets, toilets, and showerheads can help consumers save about 10 percent on their water bills,” said Chairperson Ellen Nowak. “Because these activities help protect water resources and reduce bills, we encourage water utility customers to find and fix both indoor and outdoor leaks throughout the year.”

Consumers should visit the WaterSense Fix a Leak webpage, which includes videos, fact sheets, a checklist, and other educational resources on how to track down and repair leaks. If your search for leaks results in the need to replace a fixture, look for WaterSense labeled products, which are independently certified to use 20 percent less water and perform as well or better than less efficient models. In many cases, fixture and part replacements pay for themselves quickly, and a local plumbing professional can install them easily. In addition, your utility may offer rebates for WaterSense fixtures.

Visit www.epa.gov/watersense to find WaterSense labeled products and auditors in your area, and watch for special events in your community, as Wisconsin has 45 WaterSense partners, including 16 utility partners.
