Appleton, Wisconsin – In an effort to increase female enrollment in local STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs, Miller Electric has teamed up with the Talent Collaborative of the Fox Cities Chamber to organize the second annual Smart Girls Rock! Fox Cities event, scheduled for Tuesday, October 25th.

Approximately 90 freshmen and sophomore female students from Neenah, Menasha, Appleton West and St. Mary Central High Schools will attend the one-day event at Miller Electric, 5730 Technology Circle in Appleton, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The students will experience group speed mentoring with 50 women in STEM-related professions, as well as participate in other interactive activities which expose the students to in-demand STEM careers. Group speed mentoring is a form of mentoring which provides a valuable learning opportunity for less experienced individuals while requiring a limited commitment of time and resources for more experienced individuals serving as mentors. Smart Girls Rock! allows young girls to set career goals and start taking steps to realize the realities of those goals.

During the speed mentoring sessions, groups of up to three students will be formed and move through stations around the room. Approximately five minutes will be spent at each mentoring station. The students will be provided with a short list of questions geared toward each Science, Technology, Engineering and Math profession.

Tiffany Carter, Chair of the Smart Girls Rock! Fox Cities Committee, and Mechanical Engineer at Miller Electric, shared a quote from a freshman who attended the event last year, “My favorite part of the event was connecting with certain people and feeling like I could relate.”.

Smart Girls Rock! Fox Cities is made possible through the generous support of: Miller Electric Mfg. Co., The Talent Collaborative of the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce, Appvion, Bemis, Best Western Premier Bridgewood Resort Hotel, Culvers, Festival Foods, Fox Valley Technical College, Gulfstream, Kimberly Clark, Miron Construction, Radisson Paper Valley Hotel, The Boldt Company, and the Women’s Fund for the Fox Valley Region.
