Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield: Named a finalist for Corporate Citizen of the Year in 2015 BizTimes Nonprofit Excellence Awards

MILWAUKEE – Nov. 4, 2015 – Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has been named a finalist in BizTimes Media LLC’s Nonprofit Excellence Awards. The finalists will be recognized at a
breakfast event in at the Potawatomi Hotel & Casino Events Center on Thursday, Nov. 5.

The awards are designed to shine a light on the community impact of southeastern Wisconsin businesses and nonprofits. The program also salutes the work of for-profit organizations,
executives and professionals who donate their time, talent and treasure to community causes.

More than 100 nominations were submitted for the program this year, and 30 finalists were
named in 10 different categories. An overall winner in each category will be announced on
Thursday morning.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield is a finalist in the Corporate Citizen of the Year category,
which recognizes the charitable and volunteer activities of for-profit companies working to make a difference in Wisconsin.

Celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield is committed to improving health care with trusted and caring solutions. In the community, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and its corporate foundation work to identify the local health issues most need of attention, and then direct the company’s charitable support and volunteer efforts toward improving health in those areas.

Anthem’s current focus is on promoting active lifestyles and working to reduce the devastating impact of chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, heart disease and lung disease on Wisconsin children, adults and seniors. In 2014, the activities of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, its foundation, and associates resulted in more than $1.5 million and hundreds of volunteer hours being directed to health-improving causes and programs throughout Wisconsin.

“Whether it’s climbing the stairs with the American Lung Association, helping kids learn healthy habits, or organizing an in-office food drive, improving health and serving our communities is at the core of what we do,” said Larry Schreiber, president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Wisconsin. “It’s a true honor to be named a finalist for this award, and it energizes us to keep finding new ways to give back and help others.”

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s ongoing community support is anchored by the company’s year-round programs that encourage volunteerism and philanthropy:

 Associate Giving Program – Recognizes associate contributions to health and human services nonprofits with a 50 percent match from the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation.
 Dollars for Doers – Gives company associates an opportunity to track service hours and earn a grant from the Anthem Blue Cross charities at which they volunteer.
 Paid Time Off – Provides associates with up to eight hours of paid time per calendar year to use to volunteer at a qualified 501(c)(3) charity of their choice.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has also been recognized by multiple organizations for its
workplace environment and diversity initiatives, including the 2015 Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles® Platinum award from The National Business Group on Health, and CEO Cancer Gold StandardTM re-accreditation from the CEO Roundtable on Cancer.
