Joy Global to phase out operations at Orchard Street facility
As it continues to weather one of the toughest mining markets in years, Joy Global
this week announced plans to cease operations at its Orchard Street facility in
Milwaukee.
Services now handled at Orchard Street, motor assembly and electrical wiring work
for some of the company’s surface mining products, will be transitioned to other
facilities in Joy Global’s worldwide network. Work at the facility is expected to
conclude by April 30.
The plans were announced to affected employees Monday in conjunction with the
mailing of a permanent WARN notice to the 56 employees affected. Those affected
will have access to the government resources available under the WARN Act,
including resume and interview training, and access to employment finding
resources.
No other areas of Joy Global’s Milwaukee manufacturing operations are covered by
this WARN notice.
“We are doing everything we can to help our employees manage this difficult news
and prepare for the upcoming closure,” said John Koetz, president of surface mining
for Joy Global. “Given the state of the global commodities markets, we have to adjust
our operations to make the best use of our facilities worldwide.”
