St. Paul, Minnesota (December 13, 2010) — In today’s digital age, criminal evidence and evidence of compromised data can show up in everything from desktop computers and cell phones to iPods and cameras. To better help companies identify security breaches, malware attacks, or even intellectual property misappropriations, Wipfli LLP has enhanced its existing forensics capabilities with a new, state-of-the-art digital forensics lab.

Located in St. Paul, Minnesota, the new lab’s dedicated equipment and secured space allows Wipfli’s forensic investigators to extract vital digital evidence from a variety of its clients’ media using the newest technologies and the latest techniques. According to Marc Courey, Wipfli’s Director of Litigation Support/Fraud and Forensic Services, the firm’s goal in establishing the lab was to expand its digital forensics excellence even further.

“We’ve long provided exceptional digital forensics services to clients and companies throughout the Midwest whenever they suspect abuse, fraud, or cyber crimes. Our new lab reinforces this commitment, complements our continued onsite services, and lets us leverage the latest innovations to keep companies informed and ultimately protected,” said Courey.

Digital forensics is the application of science and engineering to recover digital evidence. Wipfli’s investigators are capable of extracting deleted, encrypted, fragmented, or damaged information and establishing event timelines that may serve as evidence in internal or criminal investigations, employment litigations, or intellectual property disputes.

Wipfli will continue to perform on-site data acquisition services at client locations, while the new lab will allow Wipfli to conduct further exams in a security-enhanced environment. For the exams, clients can place a wide variety of digital media in Wipfli’s physical custody, including personal computers, laptops, USBs, network storage, PDAs, and smartphones, as well as traditional electronic storage media. The lab’s restricted access and an auditable process further protect the integrity of examinations.

Other features include specialized hardware for data acquisition and analysis and a secure network environment that’s segregated from the firm’s other systems. In addition, the lab supports and protects the archive of client evidence and data, as well as the custody of client equipment throughout the life of an investigation or for as long as necessary.

Wipfli’s team of credentialed fraud and forensics professionals helps protect companies across the Midwest. The firm’s digital forensics investigators have extensive experience and specialized training and hold a long list of advanced certifications and degrees, among them Certified Fraud Examiner, Certified Financial Forensics, Certified Public Accountant, Certified Information Technology Professional, Certified Information Systems Security Professional, EnCase Certified Examiner, and Juris Doctorate, to name a few.
