MILWAUKEE, Wis. (November 11, 2010) – The Wisconsin Green Building Alliance (WGBA) is proud to announce the latest state recipient of the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification, the second-highest rating in the USGBC’s LEED Program. The St. Elizabeth Hospital Heart, Lung & Vascular Center, which opened in August 2009 in Appleton, Wisconsin, has achieved LEED Gold status. The award will be presented to the Center in Appleton on December 1, 2010, at 11:30 AM. Representatives from the USGBC Board of Directors, the WGBA Board of Directors and the Executive Director of the WGBA will be present at the ceremony.

An Affinity Health System project, the Heart, Lung & Vascular Center joins six other LEED Certified facilities in the Affinity Health System — the St. Elizabeth Hospital south edition and five Affinity Medical Group clinics: Brillion, Darboy, Greenville, Deerwood, and Little Chute.

WGBA members from the Milwaukee area and the State of Wisconsin worked on the project, including Hammel, Green & Abrahamson, Inc. of Milwaukee, Johnson Controls of Neenah, Affiliated Engineers, Inc. of Madison, and in Appleton, and the Oscar J. Boldt Construction Co. worked on the project.

Elements of the building that contribute to the LEED Gold Certification include:

* Plumbing fixtures that reduce the water use by more than 30 percent.

* Construction waste management plan that achieved a 65 percent recycle rate.

* Materials with high recycled content were purchased locally.

* A thermal comfort permanent monitoring system.

* Interior lighting that offers a 48.3 percent savings.

* Electric space cooling that offers a 42.3 percent savings.

* Heat rejection that offers a 94.1 percent savings.

* Interior fans that offer a 79.5 percent savings.
