SBR Coaching: Triathlon, cycling lead to booming business for local coaching company

Verona, Wisconsin – October 11, 2010 – While Wisconsin may be traditionally known as Packer and Badger country, the impact of endurance sports is fast becoming a major player in the local economy. One local business owner, Jessica Laufenberg of SBR Coaching, can attest to the influence that hallmark events like IronMan Wisconsin and the Madison Marathon have had on the bottom line. Despite the recession SBR Coaching has seen a swift uptick in business, leading to space expansion and purchasing of high-tech training equipment. An open house to unveil the new facilities will be held on Friday, October 22 at 6:30 pm.

“Business has been remarkable,” said Laufenberg. “We offer a Performance-Based Cycling class for indoor training during the winter. This year, we had to double the spots available and add two sessions a week to meet demand.”

In May 2010, the Wisconsin State Journal reported that event-related economic impact of Ironman Wisconsin was estimated by the Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau at $2.3 million, as 2,400 competitors and 30,000 fans flood the Madison region every September for the race. But the year-round training needs of local athletes has led area coaches, including SBR Coaching, to increase capacity.

“We’re doubling our space to 2,300 square feet in partnership with Rocket Bicycling Studio, which specializes in custom-built bicycles,” said Laufenberg.

An exercise physiologist and Level II USA Triathlon Coach, Laufenberg also decided to invest in the most advanced bike fitting equipment available. “My coaching goal is simple: improve performance while reducing risk of injury,” she said. For cyclists, this means determining the exact bike dimensions and geometry needed for their physique. To streamline the process, SBR Coaching is installing one of only eight GURU Bicycles Dynamic Fit Units (DFU) available in North America.

“The DFU is fully, precisely adjustable. It moves to any position possible – as you ride it,” said Laufenberg. Due to computer-controlled precision stepper motors that are continuously adjusted in real time, cyclists can maintain form while they are pedaling.“It’s also fully integrated with biomechanics and performance analysis software, so you can not only tell what optimum fit feels like – you can see what measurements give you the best results.” Peter Oyen, Co-Owner of Rocket Bicycle Studios, said, ““With this system, we can simulate any terrain and any bike geometry while measuring watts, power transfer for each foot – the works. It’s invaluable information for athletes needing to fine-tune bike fit or order a custom frame.”

SBR Coaching holds exclusive license to the Guru Dynamic Fit Unit in the south-central Wisconsin region. Athletes can contact SBR Coaching at (608) 695-8942 or info@sbrcoaching.com to schedule a session.
